"Palazzo Rucellai", Leon Battista Alberti, 1446-14 "Palazzo Rucellai", Leon Battista Alberti, 1446-1451,
Florence, Italy

This palace, inspired by Colosseum, perfectly represents the Renaissance spirit adapted to the needs of a private "house".
Leon Battista Alberti in fact designed a façade in line with the Humanist ideas that influenced all the following buildings.

The façade is divided into three tiers clearly separated by elegant entablatures that cut the rusticated stone that give a sense of strength to the entire building. This is true in particular on the first level where the stone blocks are larger and there are small square windows and square portals.

Of course there is a reason for that :-) enjoy my YouTube video to know more:

Mantova, Italy

This is "just" the ceiling of a dream room frescoed with illusionistic paintings by Andrea Mantegna.

If you look carefully, you can see some little putti among the people.
But do you know the difference between putto and angel?

They are both very popular figures in art, but often we don't know their real meaning and role.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, commonly known Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, commonly known as Caravaggio (1571-1610), was an Italian Baroque painter who left an indelible mark on the art world. Renowned for his innovative use of light and shadow, Caravaggio's dramatic chiaroscuro technique brought a new level of realism to his paintings. His tumultuous life was as captivating as his art, marked by his fiery temperament and a string of legal troubles.

Born in Milan, Caravaggio moved to Rome in his early twenties, where he gained fame for his provocative and emotionally charged works. His depictions of biblical and mythological scenes took on a raw, human quality that resonated with viewers. Despite his artistic success, his personal life was marred by brawls, arrests, and even a murder charge.

Caravaggio's influence on art extended beyond his lifetime, inspiring the Caravaggisti, a group of artists who imitated his style. His legacy remains evident in the works of painters like Artemisia Gentileschi and Rembrandt. Caravaggio's daring approach to art, coupled with his turbulent existence, solidified his position as a maverick of the Baroque era, leaving an enduring impact on the evolution of Western art.

"Giudizio Universale", Michelangelo, 1536-41, fres "Giudizio Universale", Michelangelo, 1536-41, fresco, 13.7x12 m (539.3x472.4 in)
Cappella Sistina, Rome

300 figures, over four years of work, a huge fresco made by a 67 year old Michelangelo... the result? Something that is hard to explain and is fixed in our minds like an immortal work of art.

The Giudizio Universale is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. The dead rise and descend to their fates in a chaotic mix of bodies and emotions, as judged by Christ who is surrounded by prominent saints.

"Hylas and the Nymphs", John William Waterhouse, 1 "Hylas and the Nymphs", John William Waterhouse, 1896, oil on canvas, 98,2x163,3 cm (38.7 in × 64.3 in)
 Manchester Art Gallery, UK

🎨 Hylas was the son of King Theiodamas of the Dryopians. After Hercules killed Hylas's father, Hylas became a companion of Hercules and later his lover.
In the painting Hylas is wearing a blue tunic with a red sash bending to get some water.
Inside the pond 7 young women, the water nymphs.

Apparently a romantic scene, but actually Hylas cannot suspect what is going to happen. Behind the sweet faces, the nymphs hide the real intentions: trap Hylas. In fact we can see that one of the nymphs holds his wrist and elbow, a second plucks at his tunic, and a third holds out some pearls in the palm of her hand.

Meskalamdug was an early Sumerian ruler of the First Dynasty of Ur in the 26th century BCE and this helmet shows his importance.

The holes around the border suggest that another piece was probably covering the face.
The hairbun attached at the back of the head is visible in other rulers as well.

"Tum Collegiate Church", 1140 -1161, Tum, Poland "Tum Collegiate Church", 1140 -1161,
Tum, Poland

A "weird" representation of Romanesque architecture. This time we are in Poland and in this Cathedral we can identify some unusual elements for the Romanesque tradition.
First of all the twin bell towers located at the end of the Church, but also the 2 round turrets.

This Cathedral had a tough story: it was destroyed in the 15th and at the end of 18th century and burned in 1939. What we see today is the reconstruction that ended in 1954.

"Achilles and Ajax engaged in a game", 540-530 BC, Black-figure pottery
Vatican Museums, Rome

These 2 soldiers depicted in a relaxing moment are two of the main Greek heroes of the Trojan war: Achilles and Ajax!

"Achilles and Ajax engaged in a game" is one of the finest examples of pottery art. Made between 540-530 BC by the master Exekias, this pottery is "simple", but full of info.

It represents a moment of relaxation between the two Greek heroes before the next battle during the Trojan war and we can read the tension of Ajax while Achilles is more relaxed, even if they don't know what's going to happen...

Pompeii, Italy

The House of Vettii is a villa covered on frescos in the manner of the Pompeiian Fourth Style: characterized by an intense use of trompe l'oeil effects.

In the center is visible the episode of the Punishment of Ixion. An example of the amazing Roman's painting skills!
Why Ixion got punished? Because he made mad Zeus, really mad😅

“United States Capitol” in Washington DC. To “United States Capitol” in Washington DC.

To discover its origins, we need to go back 2,000 years ago!
Yes because “Capitolium” in Latin means “indestructible” (“eternal”). That's why Thomas Jefferson insisted the legislative building to be called the "Capitol" rather than "Congress House".
