Pyramid of Menkaure, 2532 – 2515 BC, 61 m (204 f Pyramid of Menkaure, 2532 – 2515 BC, 61 m (204 ft) tall, base 102,2 x 104,6 (335 × 343 ft)

The Pyramid of Menkaure has been built to serve as the tomb of the fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Menkaure (or Micerinos in Greek). It is interesting that this building represents the end of the period of the giant pyramids that started with Menkaure’s father Khafra and his grandfather Khufu.

The location in the Giza necropolis, few hundred yards southwest of its larger neighbours, is not casual: even if Menkaure’s pyramid is smaller he wanted to continue the family lineage.

Basket of Fruit, Caravaggio, ca. 1599, oil on canv Basket of Fruit, Caravaggio, ca. 1599, oil on canvas, 46 × 64.5 cm (18 × 25.4 in)

🏛️: Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Milan

"Basket of Fruit" is a masterpiece created by the Italian Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio around 1599. This still life painting is a testament to Caravaggio's exceptional talent in rendering the most ordinary subjects with extraordinary realism. The painting features a wicker basket brimming with a variety of fruits, including apples, grapes, figs, and pears. Caravaggio's meticulous attention to detail and his use of light and shadow create a sense of three-dimensionality, making the fruits appear almost tangible. "Basket of Fruit" is celebrated not only for its technical brilliance but also for its symbolism, as it is believed to convey themes of the transience of life and the decay of the material world. This painting remains a significant work in the history of still life art and a testament to Caravaggio's innovative approach to painting.

Salvador Dalí, a renowned Spanish surrealist arti Salvador Dalí, a renowned Spanish surrealist artist, left an indelible mark on the world of art with his eccentric and imaginative works.

Born in 1904, Dalí's art is characterized by its dreamlike, almost hallucinatory quality. His famous painting "The Persistence of Memory" features melting clocks and has become an iconic representation of his unique style. Dalí's creativity extended beyond painting; he was also a skilled sculptor, filmmaker, and writer. His flamboyant personality and iconic mustache made him a captivating figure in the art world. Dalí's contributions continue to inspire and intrigue art enthusiasts, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.

Casa Santi, Urbino

This is the Madonna di Casa Santi, one of the first frescoes that Raffaello painted inside his house in Urbino. Can you guess at what age? He was just 15 years old. Raffaello's dad was court painter of the Duke, so he grew up in a perfect environment to develop his talent.
However, it was not a perfect life: he lost his mom when he was just 8 and the dad at 11. Raffaello's father understood immediately the great talent of his son and he wanted him to work with one of the best painters at that time: Perugino.

"Sacrifice of Isaac", 1401, bas-relief Florence, I "Sacrifice of Isaac", 1401, bas-relief
Florence, Italy

This weird shaped bas-relief marked the start of one of the most important art styles ever: the Renaissance.

Why??
Because for many historians this event in 1401 is the official start of the Renaissance (see my introductory video on Youtube to learn more about it) because it's a sort of breakthrough on style compared to the Gothic and because the contest itself is an indication of a new approach.

The relief in fact was "just" a single scene to decide who would have won the contract to make other 27 of them for the North bronze door of the Florence Baptistery. One of the most important monuments in Florence.

Lorenzo Ghiberti won the competition thanks to this beautiful relief perfectly chiselled in every detail that depicts the moment when Abraham is going to kill is son Isaac. A mad-man? No, the story is fascinating and you can learn more on the video:

"The Veiled Virgin", Giovanni Strazza, ca. 1850, C "The Veiled Virgin", Giovanni Strazza, ca. 1850, Carrara marble, 48 cm (19 in)
Presentation Convent, St. John’s

Like the name suggests, the statue depicts the bust of a veiled Virgin Mary and it was made by the great Giovanni Strazza.

Looking at her we feel quiet, peace, right? On her face we can read calm and humility, but, at the same time, strength. A strength that, apparently, we cannot explain for such a young woman. However, it comes from the awareness that God loves her.

At the same time, her love and faith on God make her self-confident, but without losing her humanity. And the veil is a beautiful metaphor of the faith: something so thin, light, invisible, that can be a barrier against the odds and an engine to overcome our limits.

https://youtu.be/sasO5l6BKRI

The four river gods represent the four major rivers of the four continents through which papal authority had spread: the Nile for Africa, the Danube for Europe, the Ganges for Asia, and the Río de la Plata for the Americas. And that’s why the name (translated) Fountain of the 4 rivers.

By the way, Río de la Plata for the Americas since Mississippi and Amazon were not known for their entire length.

The four river gods are of course allegories and each of them carry symbols, animals and plants that help to identify them without using names. And so we have the Ganges carrying a long oar, representing the river's navigability. The Danube touching the Pope's personal coat of arms, probably to symbolize that it is the large river closest to Rome.
The Nile is draping his head with a piece of cloth, meaning that no one at that time knew exactly where the Nile's source was. And next to him we can see a palm: a common plant in Egypt. And then the Río de la Plata is sitting on a pile of coins, a symbol of the Americas’ richness, and who he looks scared by something. A funny legend says that Bernini positioned the Rio de la Plata River like if the sculpture was fearing the facade of the church of Sant'Agnese that is in front of the fountain and it was made by his rival Borromini. We learned about this great artist in one of my previous videos, check in the description if you would like to know more. The truth is that the church was built after the fountain and the Río de la Plata is scared by the snake on the top of the rocks.

"Palazzo Rucellai", Leon Battista Alberti, 1446-14 "Palazzo Rucellai", Leon Battista Alberti, 1446-1451,
Florence, Italy

This palace, inspired by Colosseum, perfectly represents the Renaissance spirit adapted to the needs of a private "house".
Leon Battista Alberti in fact designed a façade in line with the Humanist ideas that influenced all the following buildings.

The façade is divided into three tiers clearly separated by elegant entablatures that cut the rusticated stone that give a sense of strength to the entire building. This is true in particular on the first level where the stone blocks are larger and there are small square windows and square portals.

Of course there is a reason for that :-) enjoy my YouTube video to know more:

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, commonly known Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, commonly known as Caravaggio (1571-1610), was an Italian Baroque painter who left an indelible mark on the art world. Renowned for his innovative use of light and shadow, Caravaggio's dramatic chiaroscuro technique brought a new level of realism to his paintings. His tumultuous life was as captivating as his art, marked by his fiery temperament and a string of legal troubles.

Born in Milan, Caravaggio moved to Rome in his early twenties, where he gained fame for his provocative and emotionally charged works. His depictions of biblical and mythological scenes took on a raw, human quality that resonated with viewers. Despite his artistic success, his personal life was marred by brawls, arrests, and even a murder charge.

Caravaggio's influence on art extended beyond his lifetime, inspiring the Caravaggisti, a group of artists who imitated his style. His legacy remains evident in the works of painters like Artemisia Gentileschi and Rembrandt. Caravaggio's daring approach to art, coupled with his turbulent existence, solidified his position as a maverick of the Baroque era, leaving an enduring impact on the evolution of Western art.

Cappella Sistina, Rome

300 figures, over four years of work, a huge fresco made by a 67 year old Michelangelo... the result? Something that is hard to explain and is fixed in our minds like an immortal work of art.

The Giudizio Universale is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. The dead rise and descend to their fates in a chaotic mix of bodies and emotions, as judged by Christ who is surrounded by prominent saints.
