National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

The Railway, widely known as Gare Saint-Lazare, is the last painting by Manet of his favourite model, the fellow painter Victorine Meurent, who was also the model for his earlier works Olympia and the Luncheon on the Grass. It was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1874, and donated to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1956.

"Last judgement of Hu-Nefer", 1310 BC, papyrus, Br "Last judgement of Hu-Nefer", 1310 BC, papyrus,
British Musuem, London, UK

The Egyptians didn’t have real "books", but they used papyrus scrolls. And this papyrus is really important because of the good state of preservation and the clear and beautiful hieroglyphics and vignettes (illustrations) drawn and painted. But also because it represents a famous Book of the Dead.

In this detail, in particular we can see the scene of the Last judgement of Hu-Nefer. Hu-Nefer was a scribe very close to the pharoh.
Look how every detail is carefully drawn and every symbol has a specific meaning!

"Tower of Pisa", 1173 - 1372, 56.67 meters (185.93 "Tower of Pisa", 1173 - 1372, 56.67 meters (185.93 ft)
Pisa

The Tower of Pisa is actually the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the majestic Romanesque cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa.

The height of the tower is 56.67 meters (185.93 ft) on the high side and by 1990 the tilt had reached 5.5 degrees, reason why the Italian government enlisted a team of top engineers to stabilize the tower. There’d been many attempts during its 800 year history. However, they mostly made things worse and what's interesting is that the new team, after many calculation based on computer models, found out that the campanile would topple if it reached an angle of 5.44 degrees.

🎬 If you want to know more about how it is possible for the Tower to still stand, watch the new Youtube video:

"The Birth of Venus", Sandro Botticelli, mid-1480s "The Birth of Venus", Sandro Botticelli, mid-1480s (?), tempera on canvas
The Uffizi, Florence

The first surprises are that we know very little about this painting. It was probably made in the mid-1480s, but we are not sure about it, we don’t know who was painted for or where it was originally intended to be seen.

Strange is also the subject: a complete nude goddess. In both Medieval and Renaissance art it happened to see some nudes, but usually they were Adam and Eve, so religious figures or male heroes like the Donatello’s David.

Here instead we have a pagan goddess: Venus, who was actually the goddess of love, so something really unusual for that time.

"Nike (or Winged Victory) of Samothrace", circa 19 "Nike (or Winged Victory) of Samothrace", circa 190 BC, marble, 5.57 meters (or 219 inches)
Louvre Museum, Paris

After Mona Lisa is probably the second most popular masterpiece we can admire at the Louvre Museum and in this video you will understand why it is so significative:

What does “nike” mean? In Greek mythology, Nike was a goddess who personified victory in any field, including art, music and war of course. She was often depicted in Greek ancient art with wings and in the act of flying and that’s why this work of art is also called Winged Victory of Samothrace.

"The Arnolfini Portrait", Jan van Eyck, 1434, oil "The Arnolfini Portrait", Jan van Eyck, 1434, oil on oak
National Gallery, London

Every time I look at this painting I feel a mix of feelings. Let’s be honest: it’s a bit creepy and the two protagonists are kind of ugly, but for some reasons you want to know more about them and the scene or why that weird mirror on the wall…
It’s known as The Arnolfini Portrait or The Arnolfini Wedding, The Arnolfini Marriage, the Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife and other names, but I prefer to stop here. What we have is for sure a couple (even for that there are some surprises actually) and the guy’s last name is Arnolfini.
It’s an old oil on oak painted by Jan van Eyck in 1434 on 3 vertical boards. So we are during Renaissance or, better, Northern Renaissance since van Eyck was Flemish.

Do you know the origins of the name “United Stat Do you know the origins of the name “United States Capitol” and building itself?

We need to go back in Italy for both. For the name, in particular, to more than 2,000 years ago!
Yes because “Capitolium” in Latin means “indestructible” (“eternal”). That's why Thomas Jefferson insisted the legislative building to be called the "Capitol" rather than "Congress House".

Pompeii, Italy

The House of Vettii is a villa covered on frescos in the manner of the Pompeiian Fourth Style: characterized by an intense use of trompe l'oeil effects.

In the center is visible the episode of the Punishment of Ixion. An example of the amazing Roman's painting skills!
Why Ixion got punished? Because he made mad Zeus, really mad😅

Well beside its beauty and technical execution, there is the "unusual" shape, the fact that this is Michelangelo’s only universally accepted finished panel painting still in existence and the secrets behind the real meaning...

"The Nightmare", Henry Fuseli, 1781, oil on canvas "The Nightmare", Henry Fuseli, 1781, oil on canvas, 101,6×127 cm (40.0×50 in)
Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, U.S.

🎨 Once again the Romanticm pushes our feelings to the limit and, in this painting, Fuseli depicted his interpretation of a nightmare.
It shows a woman in deep sleep with her arms thrown below her, and with a demonic and incubus crouched on her chest.
The scene is "weird" suggesting various interpretations (like it happens when we dream), but Fuseli did a great job playing with dark and lights.
Thanks to the chiaroscuro in fact we can see the details on the woman's clothes and hair.

After its first exhibition, at the 1782 Royal Academy of London, critics and patrons reacted with horrified fascination and the work became widely popular.

Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, U.S.

Faince artifacts were really appreciated by Egyptians and this is a very good example of this ancient visual art.
For the ancient Egyptians the image of the goddess Isis suckling her son Horus was a powerful symbol of rebirth that was carried into the Ptolemaic period and later transferred to Rome, where the cult of the goddess was established.

The weird hat on the goddess's head is the throne hieroglyph that represents her name. She also wears a vulture head-covering reserved for queens and goddesses. Following ancient conventions for indicating childhood, Horus is naked and wears a single lock of hair on the right side of his head.

"A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jat "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte", Georges Seurat, 1884, oil on canvas, 207.6 cm × 308 cm (81.7 in × 121.25 in)
Art Institute of Chicago

Inspired by optical effects and perception inherent in the color theories of Michel Eugène Chevreul, Ogden Rood and others, Seurat adapted this scientific research to his painting.

Seurat contrasted miniature dots or small brushstrokes of colors that when unified optically in the human eye were perceived as a single shade or hue. He believed that this form of painting, called Divisionism at the time (a term he preferred), but now known as Pointillism, would make the colors more brilliant and powerful than standard brushstrokes.

To celebrate the International Women's Day I picke To celebrate the International Women's Day I picked "Judith Beheading Holofernes" by Artemisia Gentileschi.

She lost her mom when she was just 12 and in 1611, when she was 17, the painter Agostino Tassi, a colleague of Artemisia’s dad, raped her.

However, that didn't stop her from becoming the first woman painter accepted to the prestigious Florentine Academy of fine arts. A fundamental recognition of her skills, but also a great occasion to have (almost) the same opportunities of her male colleagues.

Not only a great painter, but also wife and mother. Not by chance, she became a symbol of feminism as a person who wanted to stand against the stereotype of female submissiveness.
